What is Fascia?

Fascia is like a body stocking that sits under the skin.  It is a network of collagen and elastin fibres that form what looks a bit like webbing and supports the whole of the body, running uninterrupted from head to toe.   It penetrates every muscle, bone, artery, vein, nerve and internal organ.

In its normal, healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and wavy, allowing for movement and stretch.  However, if we incur an injury of some kind or the body experiences trauma, whether through a physical injury or through poor health or bad posture, the fascia will build up layers, becoming hard, stuck and dehydrated.   This specialised massage treatment helps to release restrictions making the area soft, pliable, hydrated and brings mobility back.

This treatment can be an excellent alternative to deep tissue massage in that the techniques used are quite different but the results can be similar in that you can feel relief from pain and improved joint mobility for example.  It can help improve circulation and nervous system transmission.

This treatment will be tailored to meet your needs.  Rather than specifying back, neck & shoulders, or legs & feet, I will work with you to create an individual treatment for you. During the treatment you may not feel like a lot is happening but you should feel relaxed and 'freer' afterwards.  This massage can also increase energy and breathing capacity, restore muscle function, improve posture and relieve both physical and emotional strain.  It can help promote self healing, balance the body and leave you feeling relaxed.

This treatment uses a range of stretching techniques to gently but effectively break down the hardening of the fascia.  A stretch can be held for up to 5 minutes at a time as it may take this long for the hardened fascia 'to give' under the pressure applied to the stretch.  For this reason no oils are used during this treatment.

If you want to book the 'combo' treatment, I will use myofascia techniques for at least 50% of the treatment and will then follow with either a holistic or deep tissue massage or a combination of the two, in order to meet your needs.
